Building A Road Bike In Pictures #4 The Stem
A stem has to resist flexing, clamp securely to the fork and handlebar and support the rider’s weight over significant impacts. It’s a difficult job and Zipp’s Service Course SL Stem is designed to do just that at a weight of only 125 grams. The stem is made from high-strength 3D-forged 7075 aluminum and comes equipped with titanium Torx bolts. It’s polished and black anodized. Specs are 31.8 mm clamp diameter, 1 1/8” steerer tube diameter, a 42 mm stack height and a 40 mm clamp width. My 110 mm long stem weighs 125 grams. Zipp specifies 120 grams for a length of 100 mm. This stem so nice, I ordered a second one in 120 mm for my Air 9 Carbon.
