When Lightweight Parts Go, They Go With a Bang

Omni-Racer seat post clamp

Back a few years ago, I stupidly purchased a couple of light-weight parts on Ebay. There were some Token bottle cages that couldn’t hold the bottles on Sonoma County’s bumpy roads and a “world’s lightest” Omni-Racer seat post clamp with a wimpy M4 (!) bolt. When I mounted the seat post clamp at the time, the M4 titanium bolt popped at half the torque spec that was laser-edged into the clamp. I didn’t replace the bolt and instead threw the clamp ito my parts bin. A couple of years went by, when I decided to give this seat post clamp its chance by pairing it with a stainless steel bolt. Commuting to work on my Litespeed today, I was just riding along, when my anorexic Omni-No-More-Racer seat post clamp suddenly announced with a loud clink, that it was ready to take its final road to the recycling bin. I rode the stretch between home and the office three more times today and tossed the clamp right after.
