When Lightweight Parts Go, They Go With a Bang
•   Back a few years ago, I stupidly purchased a couple of light-weight parts on Ebay. There were some Token bottle cages that couldn’t hold the bottles on Sonoma County’s bumpy roads and a “world’s lightest” Omni-Racer seat post clamp with a wimpy M4 (!) bolt. When I mounted the seat post clamp at the time, the M4 titanium bolt popped at half the torque spec...

Born For Offroad-Cycling
I think that I’ve come to realize that miles and elevation just aren’t enough when I saddle up on a road bike. It started last year with rides such as the Strada Bianca, the Anabaptist Bridge and climbs to the Chasseral last year. All these rides would always include stretches of gravel or dirt roads. Nothing I consider technically challenging, but roads I have yet to meet another...

Small JavaScript Update
Yesterday while writing my short ride post, it occurred to me that I have needlessly been adding a CLASS attribute to Google map links, like Timbuktu. I have made extensive use of jQuery selectors throughout the JavaScript that powers this blog, but missed to take fullest advantage for loading Google maps in a floating FancyBox window. The old code was looking for a CLASS attribute with the value...

First Road Ride In 2011
Photo 2After interviews for two pretty awesome jobs, one Monday, the other Tuesday morning, I had a free Tuesday afternoon, which in my opinion was best spent on the bike out in the fresh air. When I got home it was drizzling a bit and when I left the house on two wheels the first rain drops hit. I could have chosen an easy ride and climb up to the Bözingenberg. But I wouldn’t be me taking...

What Would One Do Without Ebay?
Back in my early days of cycling, the only places to buy things were the local bike shops and a couple of mail order catalogs. Today, mail order catalogs are a distant memory and visits to a bike shop are fewer than visits to the dentist. Online shops, Ebay, Craigslist and the For Sale sections of forums have for many years not just been my primary source for anything cycling related, but...

Logo Ideas For TwentyNiner.ch
The Swiss 29er forum TwentyNiner.ch celebrates its 5th anniversary and for the occasion the website will soon receive a fresh, new facelift. With the new design comes a new logo and we, the big wheelers behind TwentyNiner.ch, have been bouncing ideas around only to come back to a simple logo type as pictured below. We wanted something simple in two colors and wanted to keep the Swiss cross in the...

Last Ride Of 2010
Biel was sitting under a cold, thick layer of fog when I left town for a last ride in the year. I had checked the web cam of the ski lift in Les Près d’Orvin and knew that folks were enjoying some sun up there. It didn’t look like there was a lot of snow on the slopes but people were skiing. Having the Spitzberg in mind, I climbed out of Biel going west to come out somewhere between...
